HOW TO USE MEGADISC 6 - THERE ARE SOME CHANGES
**************************************************************************
This issue there is a new and improved interface (we hope you
think so too). You'll notice that XICON is no longer used to bring up
the text files - the reason being that I found PRINTEXT by Opher
Kahane, and it is pretty close to the perfect utility for a disk-
magazine. The reasons being that
1. it shows text files
2. it also shows graphics
3. it lets you print out files (from the requestor) ** Use this to
print out that particular article you want, rather than using
the PRINTFILES utility in MD_INFO, which prints out ALL the text
on Megadisc - make sure you have your printer ready for 70-odd (?)
pages!
4. it lets you have the Amiga read out the files either by page or
entire file
5. it lets you scroll up and down through the file, and even use the
keyboard to move to different parts of the file - check out the
menu with the right mouse button
6. it lets you search for any particular word or phrase
7. you can change the screen colours and
8. it's a very stable program.
The full documents for PRINTEXT are in the PROGRAMS drawer, but
you should be able to use the program without reading them. You can
also select the ABOUT menu option for a summary of use. Pull the
Printext icon onto your disk to use it to perform the same functions
on your disks. (Remember that to use such a utility to, say, show an
iconised text file, just click once on the icon for the text file,
and then double-click on the Printext icon WHILE HOLDING THE SHIFT
KEY DOWN - this technique works in practically any similar situation,
such as the Notepad with a Notepad project icon.)
As usual, the ARTGALLERY graphics can be double-clicked to view
them just like everything else on the disk, except where explained).
Some people have mentioned a difficulty in getting out of the
graphic screen - just a single click in the top left corner will do it.
If at first you don't succeed, try again, since there's an invisible
button up there and it's pretty small so it can be missed. And on the
topic of showing graphics, the graphic ICONEDITOR.MR by Graeme
Whittle in the ICONSTUFF drawer comes up when shown in a half hi-res
window - it's just the display program (SuperView). The graphic is
designed to be imported into DPaint, so check it out that way.
In the SHORTCUT drawer in PROGRAMS you'll find an excellent
CLI/macro/hot-key program - to encourage you to try it, there's a
GOTOCLI icon which, if you double-click it, will open a CLI, and in
the title bar of this CLI window you're instructed to enter
> Shortcut . This will run the program, and you'll be able to
follow what to do by checking out the menus (right mouse button).
But have a look at the docs first. Incidentally, Xicon was used to
bring up the CLI in this way, and it's an excellent way to set up
CLI-type operations - for a complete explanation, see Megadisc4.
(Xicon is going to be part of Workbench1.3, and it's by Pete Goodeve
who wouldn't refuse a gratuity, if you use his program.)
And that's about it - if you want to print out the entire text
contents of Megadisc, double click on the PRINTALLFILES icon in the
MD_INFO drawer, having made sure that your printer is ready and you've
got about 90 pages ready (there should be something for everyone!). To
print out a particular file, select PRINT from the PRINTEXT menu - a
requestor comes up, select the file you want to print (make sure it's
not an icon ".info" file) and hit OK, having made sure your printer is
ready. And of course by using the requestor in the usual fashion, you
can read other files, change directory to ARTGALLERY to see the pics,
and so on. If you want to have the files read to you, make sure that
the Narrator.device is in the DEVS directory of your Workbench disk
(as it will be if you haven't deliberately removed it).
In case you haven't already - read "READMEFIRST" on the main
window, to find out how your faithful editor screwed up...
Have a look at the files in the MD_INFO drawer for more info about
MEGADISC.
